Andrew Hii Chii Leong is majoring in Software Engineering with elective in Network Programming. He had his internship in NI Sdn Bhd with the R&D Software Engineering group. During his internship, he learned that communication and teamwork are the key aspects in producing quality software. Understanding client and user requirement is extremely important in producing a product that satisfies client requirements. Andrew is currently finishing Bachelor of Computer Science programme. He is actively looking for a developer role in the near future.

IoT-based Tailgating & Intruder Detector for Apartments

Apartments are popular choice of home for many people especially those who live in city such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang and others. The increase in amount of high-rise building both for living and working is inevitable due to increase in population density. One of the main concerns when it comes to living in apartments are personal safety and one of the problems faced is tailgating. Tailgating is an act of gaining access to premises by following residents with access key. It endangers resident safety.

Current security systems involving RFID gate, CCTV camera and security guard are not effective in handling this issue. The RFID key could be copied or stolen from the residents. The security guard might also overlook the tailgaters during peak hour. Besides, the CCTV camera only play a passive role and security guard is still required to monitor the video stream.

Thus, IoT-based Tailgating & Intruder Detector for Apartments is proposed to reduce and detect tailgating and allow the tracking of resident movement in/out of premises. The unique features of the system include the use of face recognition system in identifying intruders and tailgaters. The main components of the system are IoT devices (such as RFID reader, camera, gate lock), a mobile application and web application.
