E-Bike/E-Scooter Collision Avoidance System

The rise of shared electric bike (e-bike)/electric scooter (e-Scooter) systems provides a new micro-mobility option in many metropolitan places throughout the world. These systems have instantly attracted a large number of journeys on a variety of infrastructure such as pavements and bicycle lanes. Following its meteoric rise in popularity, there are mounting safety concerns about riding an E-Scooter. As a result of the horrific collisions, a few localities have banned or temporarily halted E-Scooters. When compared to other means of transportation such as automobiles and bicycles, the safety performance of a new micro-mobility mode is notably understudied. Mobile light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology has the potential to significantly improve transportation safety and reliability. Most commercial systems, however, are too costly for use with consumer items such as bicycles and extensive deployment throughout our transportation systems. As a result, cost-effective LIDAR systems are required, and this work covers the creation of a solution aimed towards safety results. The alternative is to build on existing e-bike/e-scooter LIDAR testing efforts and develop a comparable low-cost LIDAR system capable of capturing the interaction of an e-bike/e-scooter with nearby motor vehicles. Therefore, the option need more improvement before widespread use. Furthermore, my work suggests that low-cost LIDAR devices are a viable option for improving road safety.
