Harith Hafidzi bin Hishamudin is a final-year student at Universiti Sains Malaysia. Harith is majoring in Information System Engineering and minoring in Mathematics. During his fourth year of study at USM, he learned a lot of things, particularly about how big data works in our daily lives. He enjoys joining and attempting to volunteer for any projects that have been handled by the association that he has joined. Then, he likes to try new things because he believes it will help him become more skilled and much better. Soon, Harith is actively seeking a web developer and data analyst position.

Advanced Car Head Up Display (HUD)

Nowadays, vehicle dashboards especially cars are getting more advanced and provide an interactive display and dashboard features as well. The new design used on the dashboard appeals to any driver. The current trend of driver is to purchase a dashcam to get a view of the car footage or relying on the existing camera system that comes with the vehicle. Touch capacitive TFT / LED screen is also getting familiar in most of the vehicles to provide the accessibility for changing functions such as the radio, therefore, the dashboard is getting more features replacing the needs for tangible dials or buttons. The screen helps the driver to get a view of footage at the back of the vehicle. However, this will cause driver difficulties to view since the blind spot is still a major problem in any vehicles. It does not help the drivers to park from by relying the footage either, because the system does not offer parking assistance or with limited parking assistance. Another new technology that rises recently is by replacing the HUD display to windshield. However, due to the convex shape of the windshield the contour problem (picture warping) rises and this will be hard to display any HUD information to the windshield. With the HUD display shifted to windshield, the dashboard at the driver sides can be minimized with better Field of View (FOV).
The aim of this project is to simulate the potential use of HUD on the dashboard for the driver to view through the windscreen with all the information augmented on the windshield such as live view of reverse, sensors and pedometer. Thus, this system is called WAHSP: Windshield Augmented HUD with Surround Parking System. One of the features of this system is to provide drivers with live assistance of parking and reverse, with sensors to detect nearby cars or any occlusions blocking the car. The system will automatically alert them by using combinations of sensors and image processing. This project gives simulates the potential of picture warping to straighten the HUD over the curvature of the windshield. The impact of the simulation is to provide a proof of concept of WAHSP.
